Support officer for the “French Language Tutorial Program-FLTP” project

The School of Arts and Languages of the University of Rwanda teaches various courses, especially language and literature courses. The four official languages of Rwanda are taught there, namely English, French, Kinyarwanda and Kiswahili. However, the predominance of English and Kinyarwanda in all areas of life in Rwanda since English became the official language and language of teaching of Rwanda means that French has lost its status as the language of teaching today. Today is clearly losing momentum. Serious measures and more effective strategies are needed to raise this language at the School of Arts and Languages and in education in general.

The project “French Language Tutorial Program-FLTP”, initially designed in English, is a refresher program intended for students at the University of Rwanda, especially those from the School of Arts and Languages, but which could be extended to other schools if my means allow. The main objective of the project is firstly to strengthen the knowledge of French languages of our students to equip them with the necessary prerequisites which would allow them to better follow the other programs taught at the School of Arts and Languages. Indeed, these students suffer from many gaps in French because most of them do not even have basic knowledge; there are even those who did not study this language at all in secondary school even though they are often required to take certain French courses and/or in French at university. The program therefore proves to be an important support which, in the end, can open up new opportunities for our students in their professional life in terms of more effective communication in French and intercultural as event organizers, tourist guides, poets, theater actors, language teachers, translators and interpreters, receptionists, diplomats, and many others.
