The Youth Mind Fitness project

The impacts of Covid-19 among young people are evident, with an estimated 9 million Ugandans dealing with mental health issues, “Daily Monitor, February 05, 2021” hence the need for an urgent action. Therefore, Golden Boots Uganda proposes the Youth Mind Fitness Project, that aims to address the current mental health status of 500 youth; including adolescent girls, youth with disabilities and refugees between 10-26 years of age living in low-income areas of Bwaise, Katwe, Kisenyi and Kabalagala in Kampala Capital through creating access to community sport and physical activities like Football, Boxing, Zumba, Basketball alongside peer-to-peer training, counseling, awareness and referrals by mental health experts, distribution of education materials, and motivation from mental health survivors to improve their mental, physical and social well-being. In addition to leadership mental health training workshops and mini sports tournaments, the project will also empower these young people to overcome negative psychological effects associated with stressors such as covid19 lockdowns, self-isolation and quarantines, infection fears, inadequate information, job and financial losses, and stigma and discrimination.
